<p>The same foods are grown there today as they always were, and are wholesome, promoting good health and long life. </p>
<p>The statures of the ancient Greek attest to their beautiful and strong bodies.</p>
<p>The ancient Greeks were known to be sexually active into old age and this was due to their diet. </p>
<p>Basics in the Greek Diet</p>
<p>The basics are traditional bread, made without commercial yeast (but use a prozimi, or a bit of leavened dough from the previous backing. </p>
<p>This prozimi in many cases is hundreds of years old, or older, in culture. </p>
<p>The basics are honey, olives and olive oil, fresh white cheese (now known as feta), the onion, garlic, natural tomato, eggs, wine vinegar, wine and fresh vegetables and fruits in season. </p>
<p>Pulses, especially the lentil, was (and is) a basic stable of Greek diet. Nuts also form part of the ancient Greek diet.</p>
<p>No Meat?</p>
<p>Actually in ancient times, eating meat was rare anyway. Without refrigeration, meat eating was reserved for some holidays and festivals only. </p>
<p>Therefore, the ancient Greek was mostly vegetarian. This kept them strong and healthy, without illnesses such as cancer and other diseases of excess (as were found in Rome).</p>
<p>Breakfast</p>
<p>An ancient Greek breakfast would, somehow similar to today, consist of some fresh baked bread with honey and cheese. </p>
<p>The beverage of choice was a sort of tea made from mountain herbs (still drunk today, called tsi to vounou ). </p>
<p>This infusion has great antiseptic qualities, and stimulates the immune system. The breakfast would be hardy, as there was no lunch, or if there was, it was symbolic.</p>
<p>Snack  Hunger Breaker</p>
<p>The shepherds of Greece today, follow the meal that is as old as time. They have some hard bread, a tomato, an onion, some cheese (maybe but not always), and water. </p>
<p>It keeps the hunger at bay. </p>
<p>The cheese is the white Greek feta. It is a naturally low fat cheese, and is cured in salty water, then whey. It has a distinctive taste, and it packed full of available calcium, and milk proteins. </p>
<p>End of the Day Meal</p>
<p>The day ended when the sun went down in ancient Greece, and the meal was a cooked one. Lentils (known as faikes) in ancient Greece, as modern Greece, is a culinary art. It is also the oldest food mentioned in the Bible. </p>
<p>It is the food that Jacob was cooking when he traded a bowl of it from Esaus birthright. Faikes is boiled lentils with fresh tomato, onion, garlic, and laurel leaf. </p>
<p>The smell of cooking lentils awakens a great deal of emotion in almost any human. The taste is delicious, the nutritional value exceptional, and is very satisfying.</p>

<p>In 2006 the islands of Okinawa were estimated to have around 740 centenarians out of a population of 1.3 million. 90 percent of the centenarians were female.</p>
<p>The ongoing Okinawa Centenarian Study, headed by Dr. Makotu Suzuki, has come up with some very interesting reasons why it is that inhabitants of these Japanese islands <a href="http://www.resveratrolworx.com" target=_self>live longer</a> than anywhere else in the world.</p>
<p><strong>There are 50 centenarians for every 100,000 people, which compares with a ratio of between 10 and 20 per 100,000 in most developed countries.</strong></p>
<p>Dr Suzuki examined the lifestyle and genetics of more than 900 centenarians, as well as many more in their 70`s.</p>
<p>Rather than putting on weight as they got older, the researchers discovered that these people were still lean and fit. Their arteries were clean, and they had remarkably low rates of all types of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Their minds were lucid, and proportionately fewer suffer from dementia compared to people living in other places.</p>
<p>Although genetics has a big part to play, it seems that the avoidance of tobacco, a good diet (low in calories) &#8211; consisting of plenty of vegetables and fruits, natural fiber, and good fats &#8211; along with moderation in the use of alcohol, all play a role in the health of Okinawans.</p>
<p>The study found something else of interest. Many inhabitants of the islands will stop eating once they are 80 percent full. As soon as they get the feeling they have eaten enough, they stop. That way they don`t overeat, which helps them to keep weight off, and reduces the burden on their digestives systems.</p>
<p>Finally, exercise doesn`t stop once a certain age is reached. Daily walking, traditional dancing and other activities help. They enjoy gardening, and naturally, homegrown produce is high on the list of foods on the dinner table.</p>
<p>One of the causes of death among many peoples is due to the effects of stress. Okinawans tend to be positive people, and women especially manifested strong social integration. Good health is, therefore, a good combination of mind and body.</p>
<p>The study showed that longevity is influenced by genes, diet, exercise, and a balanced way of dealing with stress.</p>

<p>Yesterday, the first conclusions of a study on prostate cancer patients were made public. It seems that for the first time in history a cancer vaccine is delaying the progression of the disease and patients can <a href="http://www.resveratrolworx.com" target=_self>live longer</a>.</p>
<p>This vaccine was desperately needed because asymptomatic advanced prostate cancer is known to be resistant to hormone therapy used in early detected prostate cancers and no other treatment is effective against it.</p>
<p>Eric J. Small of the University of California at San Francisco said that this trial is an important one because it will open the way to other treatments regarding prostate cancer.</p>
<p>L. Gulley of the National Cancer Institute was very excited about the discovery and declared that the vaccine is important not only for those who suffer of the disease but also for the field. This vaccine confirms what everybody denied, that vaccines can really work.</p>
<p>This vaccine is not like the others that are designed to prevent a disease. This is made to treat advanced prostate cancer by increasing the immune systems response to cancer cells.</p>
<p>The vaccine has been made out of a genetically engineered protein and a dendritic cell provided from the patients bloodstream. Three shots of the vaccine were made over the course of a month. The immune system will react and will activate immune T-cells to find and destroy the cancer cells.</p>
<p>Eric J. Small along with other 19 US institutions conducted the study which was funded by the Dendreon Corporation (the developer of the vaccine) based in Seattle, Washington. Small included in the study 127 patients suffering of asymptomatic metastatic hormone refractory prostate cancer (HRPC). 82 of them received the vaccine and 45 got placebo.</p>
<p>For those treated with the vaccine, the median rate of survival was 25.9 months. For those who got a placebo treatment, the overall of survival was 21.4 months.</p>
<p>The conclusions were that 115 patients of this group had progressive disease at the time of data analysis and all patients were followed for survival for 3 years.</p>
<p>The vaccine was well tolerated by patients and the side effects were mild: fever and chills. Five of the subjects declared they had mild urinary problems. This is good news because chemotherapy gives a lot of unbearable side effects.</p>
<p>Most of the patients can follow a treatment based on surgery, radiation and hormone therapy, but asymptomatic metastatic HRPC is known to be resistant to hormone therapy and every year more than 30,000 men die because and no other treatment is effective against the disease, this is why a treatment was urgently required.</p>

<p>According to a recent study by scientists in the United States by eating less and losing weight, reducing our calorie intake we can increase our life span. </p>
<p>By restricting calorie consumption over long periods scientists show that it increases the lifespan of rodents and other short-lived species, but it has never been shown to occur in humans. </p>
<p>A team at Louisiana State University studied four groups of 48 men and women over six months, who were given varying amounts to eat. </p>
<p>In the &#8220;very low-calorie&#8221; group, subjects were given 890 kilocalories a day until they lost 15 per cent of their weight, followed by a weight maintenance diet. Scientists found evidence of changes in the body that have been linked to prolonging human life. </p>
<p>The studies show that sustained calorie restriction caused a reversal in two of three previously reported biomarkers of longevity, a decrease in energy expenditure and a reduction in DNA fragmentation, reflecting less DNA damage,&#8221; a paper in the journal Jama said. </p>
<p>While these studies are preliminary longer term studies are needed insure prolonged effects on the human ageing process.</p>
<p>Scientists found that a strict low-calorie diet can decrease DNA damage linked with aging. </p>
<p>During the study people ate as little as 890 calories a day for six months. Their insulin levels fell and metabolisms slowed changes that are thought to increase longevity.</p>
<p>The findings are provocative, but preliminary. Longer-term research will try to sort out whether such changes can meaningfully extend people&#8217;s lives, said senior author Eric Ravussin of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University.</p>
<p>&#8220;They are the first proof that what has been observed in rodents seems to be also working in humans,&#8221; Ravussin said.</p>
<p>The latest study appears in Journal of the American Medical Association.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very exciting,&#8221; said Dr. Evan Hadley, director of the NIA&#8217;s geriatrics and clinical gerontology program.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a step forward but not the whole journey,&#8221; said Hadley, whose agency is part of the NIH.</p>
<p>Dietary guidelines for weight maintenance recommend about 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day, depending on age, gender and activity level, with the higher amount generally for very active men.</p>
<p>Non-liquid weight loss diets used in the study were high in fruits and vegetables with less than 30 percent fat.</p>
<p>Blood tests showed substantial decreases in the amount of age-related DNA damage in each of the three dieting groups, compared with their initial levels. That kind of microscopic damage is linked to cancer and other age-related ailments, but it&#8217;s unknown whether the small changes seen in the study would affect the study volunteers&#8217; disease risks.</p>
<p>Insulin levels also decreased after six months in all three reduced calorie groups. Core body temperature also dipped slightly in two low-calorie groups but not in the liquid-diet or control group.</p>
<p>The results show that the diets are safe, and not impossible to follow, Hadley said.</p>

<p>Are you one of these people that believe fervently that by keeping your body in shape will eventually lead to a much longer, healthier and happier life-span?</p>
<p>Well, it certainly helps, and those that treat their bodies like a temple certainly do enjoy a much more illness-free existence, and relative freedom from stress.</p>
<p>But there is one other area that many people ignore &#8211; at their peril &#8211; and that is the stress of keeping up with &#8216;The System&#8217;.</p>
<p>The System?</p>
<p>Yes &#8211; The System &#8230;</p>
<p>Most people are dragged into &#8216;The System&#8217; from a very early age, and only a very few people ever manage to escape it &#8211; less than 1% in fact &#8211; and you can always tell those who have bucked this system, and done their own thing.</p>
<p>The System we are talking about here is a spin-off from the Industrial Revolution where the workers were paid just enough to meet their basic needs but not enough so that any of them could actually leave and do their own thing.</p>
<p>This has been translated into modern day society in that we are all taught from an early age that we should go to school, get a good education, get a good job, and work all your life until it comes to retirement. At least in the early days of the Industrial Revolution, many employers provided special houses for the long serving employees, so there was a good reason to be faithful and dutiful towards their bosses. </p>
<p>Perhaps until 50 or 60 years ago, a similar situation was in place with all sorts of State run pension schemes and the like &#8211; but not any more. State pensions, and even a lot of private pensions, are just not going to be able to provide anything like the simple needs of everybody, especially as the &#8216;Baby Boomers&#8217; (kids born in the 40&#8217;s to 60&#8217;s) start reaching retirement age.</p>
<p>But look what is happening on the retirement front &#8211; are governments trying to make the situation better or worse? Well, they are running scared, as they are also fully aware the effect the massive expansion in retirement needs of the Baby Boomers are going to have on the economy, and are possibly looking at billions more needed in pension payouts. With more and more people looking for a wealthier life style, this is going to cause a lot of political issues.</p>
<p>In many countries in the world, there is much talk about governments increasing the age to qualify for your pension, and many are opting for the time you reach 70, rather than the old established retirement age of 65.</p>
<p>Now, you may think that&#8217;s fine &#8211; if you fancy working &#8217;til you are old and shrivelled, with no hope of an active retirement, then that&#8217;s your choice. Me &#8211; I fancy having an eye still for the opposite sex in my &#8216;retirement&#8217; years.</p>
<p>But &#8211; here&#8217;s another not so well-known fact &#8211; recently, a major insurance company just did some research on the effect of retirement age with regard to your active life span.</p>
<p>Did you know that:-</p>
<p>If you retire at 65, the average life expectancy is 71.</p>
<p>If you retire at 60, the average life expectancy is 76.</p>
<p>If you retire at 55, the average life expectancy is 81.</p>
<p>How clever &#8211; if your government increases the retirement age to 70, then by following &#8216;The System&#8217; you will all probably be dead before you start to draw any money from the State, leaving all that tax money in the government&#8217;s very grateful coffers&#8230;</p>
<p>So, the sooner you retire, the longer your anticipated wealthier life span, not to mention a longer lifespan filled with abundance and plenty, a healthier lifestyle, and one filled with financial independence&#8230;</p>
<p>Now, how on earth does a normal person buck The System, creates their own wealthier life and become financially free of this system, that controls and rules most people&#8217;s lives? </p>
<p>Simple. They have &#8216;The Knowledge&#8217;. </p>
<p>They are taught by enlightened friends, mentors, or life coaches, that the way to succeed in this life is not to work for money, but make money work for you!</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s face it; you only have 24 hours in a day, seven days a week. Once those have been &#8217;sold&#8217; to your employer, there is nothing else available to you.</p>

You probably already eat a lot of foods with cooked tomatoes such as pasta sauce, soups, sauces and even pizza.   If you really want the best health benefits, eat foods that are not loaded with preservatives and are made from organic tomatoes.  You can also get lycopene from watermelon, guava, pink grapefruit and red bell peppers &#8211; generally any fruits and vegetables that are red will have lycopene in them.</p>
<p>Vitamin A is essential for good health and that&#8217;s why getting enough beta-carotene as important as your body turns this into vitamin A.  This vitamin is essential for good vision and also contributes to healthy skin that can help reduce the risk of some cancers, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.  Beta-carotene can be found in orange colored fruits and vegetables such as squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes and cantaloupes.  These foods also contain lutein and lycopene which can help reduce premature wrinkling and can also help your body fight damage to your eyes caused by the sun which can result in macular degeneration.</p>

While it might seem like just taking vitamin supplements can do the trick, this is no substitute for the real thing as the real fruits and vegetables have other chemicals and enzymes that are not included in the supplements.</p>
