Resveratrol and Weight Loss

There has been much ado about the reported ” “French Paradox,” (how is it that the French eat a high-fat diet, enjoy very rich, fatty desserts, drink wine and still have better cardiovascular health than the USA?). One of the biggest differences seems to be the wine consumption, especially red wine (a staple on most Mediterranean tables). Red wine contains one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants, Resveratrol.

Resveratrol is a polyphenol found in high concentration in red grapes, red wine, peanuts, and pines. Resveratrol is thought to be the reason why French people can consume large quantities of fat in their diet and remain relatively unaffected by the diseases normally associated with a high fat diet. Resveratrol is a broad-spectrum agent that stops cancer in many diverse ways, from blocking estrogen and androgens to modulating genes. Resveratrol is now available in supplement form, so you can experience all of its health benefits—without the side effects of increased alcohol consumption.

Unlike normal cells, cancer cells proliferate rapidly and lose the ability to respond to cell death signals by undergoing apoptosis. Resveratrol has been found to inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis in a number of cancer cell lines. When added to cells cultured outside the body, resveratrol has been found to inhibit the proliferation of a variety of human cancer cell lines, including those from breast, prostate, stomach, colon, pancreatic and thyroid cancers. The strongest evidence of anti-cancer action of resveratrol exists for the tumors it can come into direct contact with, such as skin and gastrointestinal tract tumors.

Until more is known about the estrogenic activity of resveratrol in humans, women with a history of estrogen-sensitive cancers, such as breast, ovarian and uterine cancers, should avoid resveratrol supplements. Laboratory experiments showed that resveratrol:Reduced the function of proteins in the pancreatic cancer cell membranes that are responsible for pumping chemotherapy out of the cell, making the cells chemo-sensitive. The study also showed that when the pancreatic cancer cells were doubly assaulted — pre-treated with the antioxidant, resveratrol, and irradiated — the combination induced a type of cell death called apoptosis, an important goal of cancer therapy.

Red wine contains resveratrol and even higher levels of flavonoids. Socioeconomic and lifestyle differences between people who prefer wine and those who prefer beer or liquor may explain part of the additional benefit observed in some studies. Several studies have found that people who prefer wine tend to have higher incomes, more education, smoke less, and eat more fruits and vegetables and less saturated fat than people who prefer other alcoholic beverages.

Resveratrol Complete nutritional supplements, first sourced from ground dried grape skins and seeds (sometimes from residual byproducts of winemaking), are now primarily derived from the cheaper, more concentrated Japanese knotweed which contains up to 187 mg/kg in the dried root. It is for this reason that many people prefer dietary supplements as their source for resveratrol. Most of these supplements contain resveratrol obtained from the herb called polygonum cuspidatum.

Resveratrol became the first-ever supplement known to activate a longevity gene. It’s possible that if a person regularly takes supplemental resveratrol, they will be more likely to withstand a stroke or other injury to the brain. To obtain the amount of resveratrol present in one serving of this outstanding supplement, you would need to consume more than 46 glasses of red wine.

Resvinatrol Complete™ Offers:

    * Powerful Antioxidant Action

    * Helps Prevent Free Radical Damage to Cells.

    * 100 mg resveratrol in every serving.

    * Capsules are sealed in a nitrogen environment.

    * Combines ellagic acid from pomegranates and raspberries.

Resveratrol is not known to be toxic or cause adverse effects in humans, but there have been few controlled clinical trials. Resveratrol is vulnerable to light and oxygen; as such, the red wine should be stored away from sun light, in air-tight, cool temperatures to protect its resveratrol potency. Studies have demonstrated that resveratrol is a potent antioxidant, has the ability to inhibit platelet aggregation (sticking together) and has anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and anti-cancer characteristics.

or are some of the benefits derived from the alcohol? because as far as l am aware alcohol only has negative effects on body, except maybe making you a little bit more relaxed for those of a nervous disposition
ie, is there any health benefit to the alcohol content? or we better off just eating red grapes?

Really a technical question (for which the Internet will provide detailed and technical Answers); followed by an observation. But hang on, I`m on YOUR side – certainly as far as almost anything will do some people some good.

I had always understood that the benefits of red wine had been attributed to TOXINS therein -what do I know? other than that my doctor recommended the stuff after my heart attack- but, in truth, the various do`s and don`t we are given these days are seemingly based on various studies of various groups of people, usually with some pre-existing `condition` which was the reason the group was studied in the first place. On a practical level, almost all such recommendations to-day seem to contradict an earlier finding anyway; so ultimately, you pays your money and you takes your pick.

MY doctor, incidentally, more recently advised that, perhaps marginally less so than red, but even white wine -IN MODERATION- was `good`. All I know is that, an ex-pat British citizen, now living in Portugal, I`ve had far more exposure, access and ingestion of wine in the past six years than the previous sixty, and I don`t feel ANY worse for it.

Do your thing; and enjoy.

The golden rule in weight loss is pretty simple: take in fewer calories than you expend in exercise. However, as any dieter will tell you, it’s far from easy. Americans spend billions of dollars a year on weight loss supplements, exercise programs and other diet aids-and still we can’t seem to win the battle of the bulge-even when we get desperate enough to try risky surgery or fad diets.

Recently a new product has come to light that may help people trying to lose weight stay on the healthy end of the spectrum: Resveratrol Select, which is unlike many diet supplements in that it uses a combination of natural and herbal ingredients designed to help the body stay healthy while losing weight. How? By mimicking certain aspects of the Mediterranean diet.Studies have shown that part of America’s war with weight lies in the uniquely modern American combination of stressful lifestyle and fast-food consumption, and that the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle seem to be more conducive to healthier weight levels and longevity.

In fact, much as been made on the news in recent months of the purported “French Paradox,” (how the French eat a high-fat diet, enjoy rich desserts, drink wine and still have better cardiovascular health than the rest of us). One of the biggest differences between the American and French diet seems to be the wine consumption, and red wine (a staple on most Mediterranean tables) contains one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants, resveratrol, which is a key ingredient in Resveratrol Select. In addition to wine, resveratrol is also found in grape skins, blueberries, cranberries and other plants, and recent animal and in vitro studies indicate that it can have a positive effect on helping to maintain healthy cholesterol levels, supporting insulin health and optimizing metabolic and immune pathways that protect cells and improve mitochondrial function.

One capsule of Resveratrol Select includes as much resveratrol as 200 glasses of wine-without the added calories that alcohol can add to the waistline. But consuming resveratrol alone isn’t enough to help with weight loss-so the manufacturers of Resveratrol Select also added a different type of antioxidant, Green Tea Extract (EGCG), which could make a big difference. Over time, green tea consumption helps increase metabolism, burn fat and reduce fat storage due to its caffeine and L-theanin content, which can be pivotal in helping to maintain energy for exercise.

Resveratrol Select combines these two powerful antioxidants with yet another energy boosting ingredient, Chromium, a niacin-based mineral that plays an important role in how the body uses insulin to burn sugars, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins for energy.

Although relatively new to the market, Resveratrol Select seems to be making a big splash, and many people are taking advantage of the free trial offer to see how well the product works for them. The trial offer also includes two bonus tools to help with weight loss: an e-book with over 70 weight loss tips, and a weight loss visualization audio. Of course, consuming fewer calories while burning more is the most efficient form of weight loss, and it’s always a good idea to inform your doctor before taking a weight loss supplement, but this new combination herbal supplement is worth a look for those concerned about maintaining good health while losing weight.

Can resveratrol “rebuild” the cells of the body? This article looks at the facts presented in the most recent studies. Some of the advertising claims that supplement manufacturers use are not exactly factual. There is no doubt that resveratrol consumption is good for you, depending on how you consume it, but it is not the only nutrient that you need to protect your body cells and extend your natural lifespan.

As an antioxidant, resveratrol protects the cells of the body from free radical damage, the primary, but not the only cause of aging. Other nutrients, such as carnosine are needed to protect the cells from glycation, which is worse than free radical damage, because it causes the formation of toxins, which has a detrimental cascading effect that includes further free radical damage.

To date, most of the studies have been conducted using cell lines in the laboratory or animal models. Some of the information that you will find on the internet is outdated. Recently, I read one overview stating that more animal studies were needed. That review was 10 years old and had not been updated or replaced or removed, which is not unusual.

Numerous animal studies have now been conducted, as well as the studies using human volunteers. One of the major pharmaceutical companies is developing a resveratrol-based drug to treat type II diabetes. In the future, there may be numerous drugs based on this antioxidant. For those of us that simply want to protect our long-term health, supplementation is the answer. The antioxidant occurs naturally in red wine, but drinking more red wine is not the answer, for numerous reasons, including the health of the liver.

What do the studies show? There are thousands of them. So, there’s no way to list all of the results here, but I’ll try to cover the basics.

Bone Cell Health—in animal studies, adding resveratrol to the diet increased the animals bone density—in cattle showing degeneration of the spinal discs, the antioxidant slowed the degeneration—reduces inflammation

Brain Cell and Nerve Cell Health—may prove useful in treating Alzheimer’s, as it protects the nerves from free radical damage—beneficial in treating multiple sclerosis in rodents—enhances balance and coordination

Heart Cell Health—improves the function of the heart and reduces cholesterol levels
Cancer Prevention—protects against head, neck, breast, lung and prostate cancer
DNA Damage

According to researchers at Harvard, DNA damage is the “universal” cause of aging in animals. The DNA within the cells contains numerous genes. Some of them signal that it is time for the cell to die. This is necessary when a cancer cell forms. Sirtuins are molecules within the cells of the body that insure that these genes do not signal the death of healthy cells. Resveratrol activates sirtuins, preventing the death of healthy cells.

Resveratrol Supports Body Cell Rebuilding

So, it does not actually “rebuild” cells, it supports your body’s ability to reproduce healthy cells and protects the DNA within the cells from damage. For supplementation, your best bet is a multi-nutritional supplement that contains resveratrol, carnosine and the basic nutrients that the cells of the body need to function “optimally”. For more information see my website on Healthy Body Supplements – Larry L. Taylor

Have you heard the terms scoliosis or osteoporosis? Maybe yes, because these are the most common diseases that adults suffer nowadays. These are due to lack of calcium, which is the one who makes our bones strong.

Calcium plays a vital role in strengthening our bones and teeth. Recent studies also found out that calcium is essential to us because it increases our nerve function, blood clotting and in controlling our blood pressure. Calcium supplement is essential especially for adults because it aids in preventing osteoporosis and helps fight against hypertension.

Calcium is abundant on dairy products such as cheese, milk, yogurt and eggs. It can also be found on grains, one good example is quinoa, and in fruits and vegetables such as oranges and broccoli. However, there are available calcium supplement that are present on tablets or in capsule form. But just be very careful and you must take prior advice from a doctor if it is safe for you to take that kind of calcium supplements. Too much intake of calcium everyday would hinder iron and zinc absorption into our system and may also lead to various deficiencies.

The most recent research concluded that through eating foods that are rich in calcium helps to reduce the amount of excessive fats in the system. Dairy industries make advertisements telling that their product would aid them to achieve weight loss. Yet, this is somewhat considered a misleading conception in some ways.

Cheese and milk from animals are very good sources of calcium, but others are also packed with almost all kinds of fats. It would be advisable to eat those plants and vegetables rich in calcium that are not good source of calcium alone but likewise contain fibers and proteins with less fat contents that will help you lose weight. Coral calcium supplement is also a good alternative since it provides us the necessary daily calcium intake with much lesser fat.

When you are taking calcium supplements, it is important that the supplement contain vitamin D because it is necessary on the absorption of the calcium into our body. Avoiding soft drinks also helps you to reduce the risk of having illnesses due to calcium deficiencies, because sodas tend to strip calcium into our bones. It is always been the best advice to take balance diet and get the necessary calcium supplement intake everyday on whole foods, fruits, in vegetables and in grains.

Some research suggests that alkaline reduced water may be useful in scavenging free radicals in the laboratory setting. Tests on in vitro lymphocytes suggest that reduced water can prevent hydrogen peroxide-induced damage to DNA, RNA and certain proteins. However, drinking ionized water would not be expected to alter the body’s pH, and there is no evidence of any claims made by manufacturers that drinking ionized water will have a noticeable effect on the body.

Electrolyzed water has been used by the food industry to sanitize food products; though effective in bacterial solutions, it was found less useful when sanitizing utensils, surfaces and food products.

The old saying goes, “Everything old is new again.” When it comes to aging and your health, that’s not such a bad thing, is it? The Ancient Romans had a secret weapon in the fight to stay young and healthy. Twenty odd years ago, modern scientists discovered the so-called French Paradox, where despite diets significantly higher in fat and calories, the French had significantly lower rates of heart disease and cardiac arrest than the rest of Western culture. Now, thanks to research into resveratrol and the development of resveratrol supplements, that same secret is available to everyone.

The Secret of Resveratrol

What the French and Ancient Roman diets have in common is red wine. The Romans even had a saying – In Vino Sanitas – “In wine there is health.” That’s because red wine contains some of the highest naturally occurring amounts of resveratrol, a powerful anti-oxidant. Grapes, blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates and other fruit produce resveratrol as protection against sun damage and fungal diseases. It helps prolong the life and health of the fruit. Something in the fermentation involved in turning grapes into red wine intensifies the amounts of resveratrol released. This magic of nature provided all those Romans and Frenchmen with a veritable fountain of youth. You simply can’t consume enough red wine anymore, however, thanks to pesticides that prevent the grapes from producing large amounts of resveratrol. Naturally derived resveratrol can be found safely and effectively in dietary supplements, providing you with all the anti-aging health benefits of red wine without the hangover.

Resveratrol and Your Heart

Resveratrol will not keep you young and healthy forever. It has been proven, in various studies, that it is good for the heart and circulatory system. And that can help keep you feeling younger and healthier longer. It acts as an anti-coagulant, inhibiting the formation of dangerous heart attack and stroke inducing blood clots. It may even lower blood pressure. Resveratrol has also been proven to slow cardiac aging. It acts on the cells to prevent the damage caused by natural aging. Preventing the damage slows the aging process. Thus, resveratrol leaves your heart younger and healthier than it found it.

Resveratrol and Cancer

Studies have shown that resveratrol may be effective in the treatment of some cancers. Resveratrol targets the cancer cells and makes them more susceptible to the effects of chemotherapy. It may also injure the cells internally, decreasing their ability to function as they would like. Resveratrol has a detrimental effect on the internal energy source of cancer cells, slowing their growth.

Resveratrol and Diabetes

A study released in 2008 showed that resveratrol was significant in improving the overall health of diabetics. Resveratrol prevents damage to blood vessels caused by the high level of glucose in a diabetic’s blood supply. By preventing this damage, resveratrol can actually prevent heart and kidney disease, as well as possibly preventing diabetic glaucoma. Resveratrol was shown to not only prevent blood vessel damage in some patients, but to actually mend and reverse vessel damage, as well. Healing this blood vessel damage may end diabetic neuropathy in hands and feet. Early research shows resveratrol may also help lower blood glucose amounts, and further study into this effect/benefit is underway.

Resveratrol and Other Ailments

Resveratrol can act as an anti-inflammatory, helping to reduce the effects of arthritis. Some studies have shown that resveratrol may help prevent or at least aid in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Resveratrol seems to elicit the same effects on the body as a long-term reduced calorie diet – producing better cardiac and joint health, lower cholesterol, lower blood sugar, and lower blood pressure. Overall, resveratrol may just be one of the most powerful anti-aging anti-oxidants known to man. Most of today’s resveratrol supplements are derived from a Japanese plant, knotweed, shown to be almost as high in resveratrol as red wine. It is important when choosing a supplement to ensure that your source of resveratrol contains no “fillers” – sugars, gums, colors and the like – other than those ingredients needed to produce the pill or powder, as these added ingredients can have effects of their own, as well as decreasing the effectiveness of your supplement.

Resveratrol and Side Effects

No supplement, natural or otherwise, comes without some risks or dangers. While studies have shown that resveratrol carries few harmful side effects, a few precautions should be noted. Resveratrol’s anti-clotting properties make it vital that resveratrol not be taken with other medications or supplements that also serve as anti-coagulants. Since resveratrol is a plant-based phytoestrogen, women who are pregnant or nursing should not take resveratrol. Those on estrogen-based contraceptives, or hormone replacement therapies should not take resveratrol without first consulting with their obstetrician, as resveratrol may affect the way these other estrogen containing medications work. Likewise, women at risk for or survivors of breast cancer should not take resveratrol, either, as it has been shown to actually increase the risks of breast cancer. Taking high doses of resveratrol (greater than 500 mg daily) has been shown to cause joint stiffness and discomfort, especially in the hands and feet.

Resveratrol and You

Resveratrol, therefore, may not be for everyone. If you, like the Romans and French, want to experience the same anti-aging benefits of resveratrol, scientists recommend a daily dose between 300 and 500 mg. It may not be a fountain of youth, but resveratrol supplements may be the next best thing. And you can stay sober in the bargain.
